This category is used when depressive symptoms cause problems with school, work, relationships with others, or daily activities. However, they do not meet the full criteria for any of the other conditions in this group.

Often, this category is used in the beginning when there is not enough information available to make another diagnosis. As time passes and the pattern of symptoms becomes more clear, the clinician may make choose a more specific condition.
